I don’t know about anyone else but I used to lose my mittens all the time when I was little. I would try to put them in my pockets or hold onto them while I was playing, but to no avail. Then my mum bought me corded mittens and the problem was solved! The cord threaded through each sleeve and around the back of whatever coat or jumper I was wearing, and then it didn’t matter if I wore the mittens or took them off, they never got lost again!
Children running around the park or the playground or even just their own garden, are very good at losing things when they’ve got more important things to think about, like a game of hide and seek, or racing each other between the trees, or seeing who can swing the highest. These corded mittens ensure they can focus only on their fun and not worry about getting in trouble for losing their mittens. And for those little ones too small for running around, even if they manage to wriggle out of their mittens while in carriers or prams, the mittens will stay with them and not get lost in transit. Be aware though, that the cord should always go behind their neck, and stay tucked under their clothes to prevent injuries or accidents.
Hand knit in cosy acrylic yarn that will keep little fingers warm in the colder months, with a thick, strong cord that won’t snap or stretch. Only sizes 1-2 years and up feature the separate thumb.
While acrylic fibres can release microplastics into the environment, wool and cotton yarns aren’t always the best choice for items meant for babies and toddlers. Wool fibres are brittle and easily broken. These wool fibres can then be inhaled and settle in the lungs causing breathing problems for very young children. Cotton is great for light weight clothing made for warmer weather, but it is quite rough against sensitive skin compared to acrylic and blended yarns designed for babies. To help combat the problem of microfibres I would suggest washing clothes made with acrylic yarn in a laundry bag to catch the fibres. If in doubt please consult your doctor or child healthcare professional.
